The entire ISO-8859-1 character set (commonly called Latin-1) is supported by HTML. This covers characters commonly occuring in many European languages other than English. However, differences in the characters supported by localised keyboards mostly don't allow for such special characters to be directly typed into a HTML document. This is why HTML supports two mechanisms for the insertion of these special characters. The entire characters set may be included in a HTML document, by referencing them with their number in the ISO-8859-1 character set, with certain commonly used characters being supported by a more memorable entity name. I.e. :
Ó and Ó
both reference the same character - Ó - but generally the Ó would be easier to remember.
The table below lists all of the ISO-8859-1 character set, together with their numeric entity referenc and where supported, the named entity reference.
NOTE : Use of the Entity names (i.e. ¡
) , especially those in the region of  -¿, may not be supported by all browsers. These entity names are recent (i.e. HTML 3.2) additions to HTML. They are supported by Internet Explorer and Netscape, both from version 3.0. Numerical entity references enjoy more widespread support, so it is generally safer to use the corresponding entity number if you can not guarantee your viewers browser version. Also, see below for some Internet Explorer specific numeric entity references.
